The AMS Market Has Evolved: Time to Rethink Your Approach

Chances are, your Association Management System (AMS) is more than five years old. If so, you may be missing out on a fundamental shift that has reshaped the entire market.
The Sophistication Revolution
As with the broader software industry, AMS solutions have become exponentially more sophisticated—yet today, that sophistication often comes at a fraction of the cost it did just five years ago. This isn’t a minor improvement; it’s a complete market transformation.
After 30 years of providing AMS guidance to more than a hundred associations, I can say with confidence: most associations that once spent over $100,000 to implement their current AMS wouldn’t have to spend anywhere near that today.
Modern systems now include rich functionality that used to require expensive add-ons or custom development: robust online communities, advanced broadcast email capabilities, and even full marketing automation tools. The long-held belief that “you have to spend more to get more” no longer holds true.
Excellent News for Your Association
For associations, this evolution is good news. The AMS market has matured dramatically—the product landscape is larger, the functionality deeper, and the user experience more polished.
By productizing their platforms with scalability in mind, newer vendors have made configuration far less complex than legacy systems ever allowed. Implementations are typically under $100,000, and many cost less than half that. These out-of-the-box solutions rival, and often surpass, what used to be considered enterprise-grade systems.
If this shift had a headline, it might read: “AMS Software Market Matures.”
Don’t Repeat Yesterday’s Process
If you’re considering a new AMS, here’s the most important advice I can offer: don’t evaluate your options the same way you did last time. The market has fundamentally changed—and your approach needs to change with it.
After all, isn’t there a saying about repeating the same process and expecting a different outcome?
